Israël zag Al-Mujamma al Islami als een mogelijke bondgenoot in de strijd tegen de toenmalige terreur van de door Yasser Arafat geleide PLO. Ook hoopte Israël dat ze door Al-Mujamma al Islami te steunen verdeeldheid kon zaaien binnen de PLO en de Palestijnse gemeenschap.

One U.S. intelligence source who asked not to be named said that not only was Hamas being funded as a “counterweight” to the PLO, Israeli aid had another purpose: “To help identify and channel towards Israeli agents Hamas members who were dangerous terrorists.”
“The thinking on the part of some of the right-wing Israeli establishment was that Hamas and the others, if they gained control, would refuse to have any part of the peace process and would torpedo any agreements put in place,” said a U.S. government official who asked not to be named.
“Israel would still be the only democracy in the region for the United States to deal with,” he said.

Et c’est ainsi, grâce au Mossad, que les islamistes ont tissé leur toile, à l’ombre d’une répression impitoyable frappant les militants du Fatah et de la gauche palestinienne.

en septembre 1993, sont signés les accords d’Oslo. Le Hamas les rejette. Mais à cette époque, 70 % des Palestiniens condamnent les attentats contre les civils israéliens. Il va tout faire pour torpiller les accords. Il sera aidé par Israël qui applique avec beaucoup de réticence les accords de paix, et ce, du vivant même de Rabin. Le Hamas se lance alors dans une campagne d’attentats obéissant à un calendrier politique précis – veille de rencontre entre négociateurs palestiniens et israéliens ou de réunion du Conseil national palestinien qui allait décider de la reconnaissance d’Israël… – permettant ainsi à la droite israélienne de revenir au pouvoir en mai 1996.
En 1997, contre toute attente, Netanyahu libère Cheikh Ahmed Yassine pour ” raison humanitaire “, au moment même où de concert avec Bill Clinton, ils exigent tous deux d’Arafat de mettre au pas le Hamas. Une libération qualifiée par Yossi Sarid, député de gauche, de “machiavélisme à la petite semaine“. En fait, Netanyahu savait qu’il pouvait compter, encore une fois, sur les islamistes pour torpiller les accords d’Oslo. Pis, après avoir expulsé Yassine vers la Jordanie, il l’autorise à retourner à Gaza où il est accueilli en héros en octobre 1997.
Le Hamas a bâti sa force en se nourrissant des échecs successifs du processus de paix, échecs auxquels il a contribué de concert avec Israël qui a multiplié les entraves à l’application des accords d’Oslo. En poursuivant sa politique du pire, le Hamas remplit ainsi la fonction pour laquelle il a été créé : empêcher l’avènement d’un État palestinien.
Israel financed Hamas in its early years as a bulwark against Arafat. This funding could have been continued in the form of cash and/or arms. Now that Hamas is being labelled as a proxy to Iran (without any mention of its Israeli finance) and is on Israel’s doorstep it can be used to prosecute a war on Iran. Things like this don’t just happen. There are some very mentally-sick people out there prepared to do anything for a full-scale war in the Middle East. That’s why Israel was created in the first place.
